Globally, it is estimated that 9.1 million tonnes of fish are discarded annually or 10.8% of the global catch. Approximately 50% of discards are generated from bottom trawlers. Discarding is a global phenomenon commonly acknowledged by fishers, the scientific community and public as a threat to food security, sustainable fisheries and a waste of natural resources.
