Mitigating offshore developments impacts on cetaceans

Piling is generally thought to represent one of the most intense anthropogenic noises in the marine environment and has the potential to cause permanent hearing damage in marine mammals. Acoustic Detterent Devices (ADDs) are used as a mitigation measure to deter marine mammals to a ‘safe distance’ from the impact zone surrounding a piling event and to be deployed for 30 minutes prior to soft start.
