Turtle bycatch (gillnets and other entangling nets)
Globally, total reported marine turtle bycatch is estimated at 85,000 turtles, but due to the small percentage of fishing effort observed or reprted this figure is a likely underestimate by at least two orders of magnitude (8.5 million). Six of the seven marine turtle species are categorized as Vulnerable, Endangered, or Critically Endangered globally by the IUCN Red List and fisheries bycatch is recognized as a major threat to all species. Bycatch of sea turtles in small-scale set net fisheries is considered the single greatest threat for some sea turtle populations.
