Many of our products are designed to make fishing more efficient and more targeted. In this way fishers can minimise the amount of gear and time in the water. It also increases the potential for fishing to move away from gear and techniques that may be more damaging to the environment or less discriminate.
An estimated 700 million chemical light sticks are discarded into our oceans every year. The discarded light sticks wash up onto our beaches and can be eaten by marine wildlife such as sea turtles. These light sticks are used in pelagic long line fisheries to attract species such as swordfish. Chemical light sticks are damaging to the marine environment – they are eaten by sea turtles and sea birds, pollute the environment and wash up on beaches as litter.
We knew we had to create a product that was cheap, robust and long-lasting if we were going to be able to compete with light sticks. ProGlow is rated to 1000 metres, can produce light equivalent to a light stick for three years of fishing.
We are working with industry to encourage greater update of ProGlow as an alternative to chemical light sticks that will help reduce plastic litter in the oceans.
